Learning Objectives:

1. Define the 7 ICD-10-PCS (PCS) Approach Values

2. Apply 7 PCS Guidelines pertaining to Approaches

3. Correctly identify the Approach value in 5 scenarios from Coding Clinic

4. Correctly identify the correct Approach value in 6 scenarios from AHIMA’s ICD-10-PCS: The 7 Approaches in the Medical and Surgical Section, and from 2016 PCS Reference Manual

5. Assign the correct MS-DRG in 3 scenarios in which Approach affects the grouper logic.

Kay has a passion for helping those who work with ICD-10 improve their coding knowledge and skills. Kay is the Inpatient Coding Educator for SSM Health-St. Louis where she provides education for coders in 17 hospitals, located across four states. Kay is the Missouri Health Information Management Association (MoHIMA) Coding Roundtable Coordinator and served as MoHIMA Delegate from 2016-2018. She served on American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Coding Clinic for ICD-1O-CM/PCS Editorial Advisory Board from 2016-2017. Kay edited the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)’s CCA Exam Preparation Workbook, Fourth Edition. In 2014 Kay was awarded the MoHIMA Distinguished Service Award. She also received AHIMA’s Coding Roundtable Achievement in Coding Excellence Award in 2014 and 2015.
